A company that operates Taco Bell restaurants in 13 Wisconsin cities, including Green Bay and Ashwaubenon, has been fined $75,735 for violating rules regarding the hours of workers ages 14-15.
Border Patrol Wisconsin Inc., based in Madison, was fined for violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act by employing more than 150 young workers byond the hours allowed under the law.
The violations were found by the U.S. Labor Department's Madison area office of the Wage and Hour Division between June 2001 and June 2003. The investigation found that 51 children age 14 and 107 children age 15 were working as late as 4 a.m., as many as 7 3/4 hours on a school day, as many as 10 hours on a nonschool day and as many as 35 hours in a school week.
Rules say children ages 14-15 can work up to three hours on a school day, 18 hours in a school week, eight hours on a nonschool day and 40 hours in a nonschool week. They can work only between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. except for the period between June 1 and Labor Day when they can work until 9 p.m.
Border Patrol at the time of the investigation operated 24 Taco Bell restaurants in Appleton, Ashwaubenon, Brookfield, Eau Claire, Glendale, Green Bay, La Crosse, Manitowoc, Menasha, Milwaukee, Osseo, Richland Center and Wauwatosa.
