GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Green Bay Packer fans bought more than $1 million worth of decorative bricks and tiles in the first year of a sale designed to shorten the duration of a sales tax paying for the renovation of Lambeau Field.
The $295 million renovation was completed in time for the start of this season.
Bricks have been bought by people from every state in the union, Washington D.C., and several foreign countries, said Greg Kuehl, who heads the brick sale initiative for the Green Bay-Brown County Professional Football Stadium District.
"This is going to be one of the most successful professional stadium brick sales ever," Kuehl said.
He said Denver has generated slightly more revenue but had a two-phase sale and is in the second phase of that effort.
As of last week, Packers fans had bought $1,022,075 worth of inscribed bricks and tiles.
The brown bricks form a walkway around the outside of the north side of the stadium. The tiles, which have green text, are displayed on walls in the Lambeau Field Atrium.
The Brown County sales tax is expected to generate about $1.5 million a month in 2004 to help retire debt from the stadium project.
