Since Brown County Board budget hearing have gone hand-in-hand with talk of cutting the Bookmobile in recent years, Sup. John Vander Leest thinks it's time to get an independent funding source for the library on wheels.
The Bookmobile costs $57,300 and Vander Leest thinks a business or generous individual could pay for the service to keep it out of budget discussions next year.
"We know the budgets are difficult each year," he said at the county Education and Recreation Committee meeting Thursday.
Library director Pat LaViolette said she liked the idea but would like the county to draw up a policy about who can sponsor county events or services.
The 10-year-old Bookmobile often makes stops at senior centers and parochial schools, she said.
"I'm not aware of any written policy and I think there needs to be that," LaViolette said. "We need some policy. We need to funnel things through the Library Board."
The committee asked corporation counsel to draft a policy about sponsorships and donations.
Vander Leest said he thought the Bookmobile could be a great advertising tool for a local company.
"The Bookmobile (goes) throughout Brown County," he said.
LaViolette suggested a group of volunteers who support the Bookmobile to get together too look for sponsors. The group will work as an informal subcommittee for the county.
Budget talks will begin again next summer, so Vander Leest said he'd like to get a sponsor in the next six or seven months.
