About half of the 150 people who will take part in next month's "By The People" forum in Green Bay, part of a nationwide program, have been contacted, the program's local coordinator said Tuesday.
About 70 Brown County residents have agreed to take part, said Ken Strmiska of the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation.
"We hope to have the rest by mid-January," he said. The 150 delegates will take part in the program Jan. 24.
Green Bay is one of 10 communities nationwide taking part in the program, initiated by MacNeil/Lehrer productions, best known for "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer" on PBS.
Strmiska said the University of California-Berkeley Research Center is handling the contacting of would-be delegates.
The delegates, he said, would spend about six hours on Jan. 24 looking at two key issues - economic stability including international trade agreements and physical security and the U.S, role in the world. The participants will receive background materials on the issues which the organizers plan to make public.
From there, through small group discussions, the delegates will come up with questions from the Green Bay session to ask a panel of experts who will take questions from the 10 cities involved.
"Our goal is not to come up with solutions, just to inform people and hopefully get the public participating more intently in the democratic process," Strmiska said.
