Starting in early 2004, sewer user charges will be changing in the city of Algoma.
The Algoma City Council, at its year-end meeting on Monday night, passed an ordinance to charge a monthly flat rate to residential, commercial, industrial and public entity sewer users, said City Administrator Tom Romdenne, instead of the present practice of charging sewer rates based upon gallons of water used.
Effective with the sewer bills being sent out in February, which will reflect the January sewer charges, Romdenne said the new monthly rates will be: $29 for residential, $70 for commercial, $319 for industrial and $150 for public entities.
Romdenne said the new sewer rates will be reviewed after three months. He noted the current sewer billing practice is based upon each water meter reading, while the new residential rates, for instance, will be associated with each residential unit.
