Three of four Algoma City Council members whose seats are up for election next spring aren't seeking new two-year terms.
Brad Schmiling in District 1, Leah Granius in District 2 and Dawn Wagner in District 3 have all submitted statements of non-candidacy. Schmiling was first elected to the council last April in a special election, while Granius and Wagner first earned full two-year terms in April 2002.
As of Tuesday morning, one candidate, Lynn Lawrenz, had filed nomination papers in District 1, and another, Tanya Hedrington, started circulating papers. But no one had even begun circulating papers in Districts 2 or 3. In District 4, incumbent John Wolfert has taken out papers.
Algoma Mayor Virginia Haske has filed nomination papers at City Hall to run for re-election. As of Tuesday morning, she was the only candidate who took out papers for the mayoral race.
Four of the eight Algoma council seats and the mayor are all up for election next spring for new two-year terms. The deadline to file nomination papers for those positions is Jan. 6.
