DNR: Dump Fox sediment in landfill The state Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday disposal of contaminated sediment from Little Lake Butte des Morts in a landfill would stay the method preferred by the two agencies. They had considered using vitrification, or using high temperatures to melt sediment into a hard glass-like substance, destroying polychlorinated biphenyls and other organic compounds. But Bruce Banker, DNR project manager, said that landfilling was "a proven, safe and cost-effective means of removing PCBs in the sediment." The DNR estimated the costs of landfilling at $66.2 million for Units 1-2 in the lower Fox River, while the heat process would cost $100.8 million and require more time to design, locate and construct a facility.
