A local artist put finishing touches on a timeline mural at Lombardi Middle School as part of the school's spirit week celebration and 40th anniversary of the school's construction.

Students and staff at Lombardi Middle School disguised themselves as figures from the past while watching artist Scott Hill sign a timeline mural that he completed in July. The cultural and historical images of the mural span the 1960s to the present and include images of a Native American dressed in traditional costume, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Green Bay Packers, The Beatles, disco and other genres of music.

"It's just nice that he went and painted it," said Steven Eichinger, sixth-grader at Lombardi Middle School who dressed as Chris Farley's character in the movie "Tommy Boy."

Seventh-grader Brett Rasmussen dressed as Luke Skywalker from "Star Wars." "I am a big fan of Star Wars," he said.

He said his favorite parts of the mural were Harry Potter and an image commemorating the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Hill said he has painted school murals at Pulaski, West De Pere and Oneida Nation schools, and is working on a mural for a day care center. He said the artwork offers something unique in an institutional setting.

"Having symbolism in school is powerful to inspire children and help them identify where they come from," Hill said.

Teachers took part in the day's celebration. Bev Rademacher, one of two student council advisors, said the students help plan the activities for spirit week each year.

"It makes the winter a little bit shorter," Rademacher said. New for this year's celebration is a bulletin board display featuring 1960s photographs of teachers.

Today, students and staff will dress according to 1960s and '70s fashion.

"I think it's gonna be a lot of Jackie-Os and hippies here tomorrow," said Lombardi Middle School Principal Nancy Croy on Wednesday. According to Croy's prediction, the halls will be filled with pillbox hats and 1960s sunglasses.

On Friday, students and staff will assemble 1,200 cupcakes in the shape of the number 40 and attend an all-school assembly.
