By Steve Arveson News-Chronicle Firefighters from three area departments battled flames, thick smoke and subzero wind chills Thursday when they were dispatched to an apartment fire in the village of Denmark. Firefighters from Denmark, Bellevue and Maribel responded to a blaze at 291 N. Wall St., just before 11 a.m., and were on the scene for more than three hours. The fire started in an upstairs apartment of the six-unit building and spread quickly through the upper level. Some tenants were home at the time but all managed to escape safely. The roof and upper level of the building were destroyed and none of the tenants were allowed back inside Thursday night. The American Red Cross is assisting some of the families. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but a maintenance worker trying to thaw a frozen water pipe may have been a contributing factor. The fire happened just one block from the Denmark Volunteer Fire Department headquarters.
