It was a campaign that didn't go into the gutter, but Michael Melotte came out of the sewer to win the primary for Green Bay City Council District 1.
Melotte, a city sewer worker who says he will retire from that job if elected, beat out painting contractor Earl Van Den Heuvel in the district. The two advance to the April general election. Dennis Van Roy Jr., a Green Bay Packaging glue operator was third.
Melotte, an alderman-supervisor in 1972-1982, was the only one of the three with any political experience.
The final tally: Melotte, 466 (37 percent), Van Den Heuvel, 402 (32 percent) and Van Roy 376 (30 percent).
Both Melotte and Van Den Heuvel cited concerns about a city water deal with the suburbs and ensuring core services in the city.
The two will seek to replace Ald. Ron Antonneau, who is leaving the council to concentrate on his County Board duties.
