Local Greens make presidential choices

Wisconsin Green Party members take another look at Nader

By Anna Krejci
News-Chronicle

Even though Ralph Nader is not seeking a Green Party nomination, Green Party voters are not overlooking him as a candidate.

Members of the local Green Party convened for the 8th Congressional District Presidential Caucus on Sunday at the Brown County Library.

Seventeen members were present to vote. David Cobb, credited as a founding member of the Texas Green Party who also ran Nader's 2000 presidential campaign in Texas, garnered the most points, 137. Kent Mesplay, who worked in prosthetic science at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago during the Gulf War, received 113 and Peter Camejo, the California Green Party's gubernatorial candidate in the state's recall election, obtained 112 points.

Nader, running as an Independent, was added to the ballot and received 42 points.

Taku Ronsman, an 8th congressional district representative to the Wisconsin Green Party Coordinating Council, said Camejo is undecided whether he will accept a presidential candidate nomination and, being a strong Nader supporter, might want his support to go towards Nader if he decides not to accept the nomination.

Green Party members are not unified in their support for Nader.

Ronsman called herself an "Unrepentant Nader Voter," referring to a bumper-sticker slogan. "For one last time I would like Greens to support Ralph Nader," she said.

If the Green Party drafts Nader as a candidate, Henning Boeddicker, party member, said Nader would be his No. 1 choice.

"He does represent a lot of the Greens' values and he's a nationally known figure that has a lot of appeal," Boeddicker said.

Jill Bussiere, co-spokeswoman for the state's Green Party, said she would vote for Nader if the party chooses him, otherwise she would stick close to the party.

"As long as it's the Green Party because that's the ticket to the future as far as I see it," she said.

Green Party members also chose two delegates to represent the 8th congressional district at the party's June presidential nominating convention in Milwaukee. Wisconsin's thirty-three delegates will be among 836 delegates nationwide that will attend the Green Party's U.S. Presidential Nominating Convention.
