Champs and chumps

News-Chronicle

CHAMPS

It's good to see somebody in Congress acting independently. Rep. Tom Petri, R-Fond du Lac, was one of 11 Republican congressmen supporting an amendment to require a reduction in spending or taxes to pay for any future increases in spending or tax cuts. In short, he's going against the plan of President Bush. Better watch it, Tom; the GOP attitude toward heresy may include burning at the stake.

We can't resist a tip of the hat to our boss. Frank A. Wood's selection for the Rotary Free Enterprise Award puts him in the company of most of Green Bay's top business people - which is, considering his service to them by providing competition and lower advertising rates, where he should have been all along.

Almost unsung in the case of the finding of a missing woman in Madison is the key person - the unknown caller, an employee of the state Department of Revenue, who called the cops after seeing something in the marsh. The employee's name is not being released; he or she does not want any credit, even though that person deserves it.

CHUMPS

And speaking of that missing student, detectives suspected all along that she lied about being held prisoner for four days by a knife-wielding kidnapper. They had no choice, of course, but to spend countless man hours trying to find her just in case her nightmarish tale was the real thing. A Madison Police Department spokesman said the search so consumed the department that officers responded only to absolute emergencies elsewhere in Madison.

Where have the good April Fool's jokes gone? (Anyone who says "into politics" or "into government" is excused.) Seriously, we didn't see or hear anything worthy of the name on Thursday.

If you disagreed with President Bush, the nearest you could get to him was three blocks away during his visit to Appleton last week. We'll say it like we've always said it; a government that doesn't listen to both sides is not a government, it's a dictatorship - and if John Kerry is elected and pulls the same stunt, we'll say the same thing and give him a Chump, too.
