Election preview: In Hobart, two trustees face challenger

By Ray Barrington
News-Chronicle

Last year, Hobart went through a recall election that left it with a new president. This year's spring elections won't bring that much change. At least one of the two incumbent trustees will be re-elected as three men are running for two spots.

Incumbent Dave Dillenburg cites the need for increased citizen participation, saying residents should be consulted before moving ahead on critical issues.

"We now have 13 citizen committees in Hobart. These committees will allow us to get the ideas and advice of those who live in Hobart," he said.

Dillenburg also urged long-range planning for new spending ventures to hold the line on taxes, and management of growth to maintain the integrity of the community and keep from increasing taxation.

Michael R. Boettcher, the one newcomer in the race, cited four issues, leading with the fate of Thornberry Creek Golf Course, which he believes the village should buy. He wants to see the village guide residents through water system expansion and well-water issues.

"Have the experts do the testing (of wells) throughout the village, and collect accurate data to determine future water decisions," he said.

As for the building of a waste transfer station, Boettcher said it was up to the courts to decide, so the village had to "work with what we have and improve what we can."

John Van Lanen, the other incumbent in the race, said simply in his response that the reasons he was running were "cutting taxes and to control spending."
