Five options have been proposed to meet the Kewaunee County's future Human Service facility needs with those options to be reduced by the Human Services Committee to three before being presented to the Finance and Public Property Committee, county administrator Ed Dorner said.
While moving at least part of the Department of Human Services into the former St. Mary's Hospital in Kewaunee has previously been proposed, the five options make reference to the hospital property which the county purchased. Human Services presently has offices at locations on Fourth and Steele streets in Algoma and at Hillcrest School and the Courthouse Annex in Kewaunee.
The "space study" objectives included with the department's five options include:
- Determine growth in each operating unit based on a 10-year projection.
- Determine the needed space now and in the future for efficient operation.
- Determine department and county interrelationships for both space and location.
- Provide options for existing and new sites.
The five proposed options - with the listed requirements for office space and storage, not including hallways - include:
Option A - Moving the Fourth Street operations to Steele Street, Aging to the hospital and remodeling the Annex. That option would require approximately an additional 5,620 square feet.
Option B - A new building in Algoma, remodeling the Annex and moving Aging to the hospital. That would require adding approximately 10,020 square feet.
Option C - A new building for all Human Services and only using the kitchen at the hospital. That would call for 14,170 square feet of building space.
Option D - Aligning department units as ideal by moving Aging and IM to Steele Street, a new building in Kewaunee and only using the kitchen at the hospital. That would require an additional 4,440 square feet on Steele Street and 7,530 square feet in Kewaunee.
Option E - Aligning department units as ideal with a new building in Algoma, a new building in Kewaunee and only using the kitchen at the hospital. That would call for 7,530 square feet in Kewaunee and 8,820 square feet in Algoma.
Various pros and cons have been listed for the options as they relate to operational efficiency, being in Algoma, possible expansion, cost, etc.
