Thanks to two local couples, Suring residents won't have to put their golf clubs away.

Luann and Dan Flynn and Linda and Chuck St. Pierre earlier this month purchased Cathedral Pines Golf Course, 529 Gold Course Road, Suring, and gave it not only a new name, but also a new future.

Now called Black Bear Trail Golf Club, the course has been an asset to the community for the past 40 years, ever since it was created in 1962 by Frank Saletri out of the family farm. The original nine holes were designed by Marty Garrity, and the second nine were designed by Bob Lohmann, who also designed the Fox Hills course in Mishicot. The course ranks 74.6 in USGE Course Ratings as being the most difficult course in Wisconsin. The slope rating is 132. The par 71 course has a total 6,751 yards.

The two couples decided to purchase the course because they did not want to see it close, so they bought it, made some improvements and hope in the future to turn a profit.

Golfers come from Green Bay, Appleton and Milwaukee to "shoot the Bear," which earned the nickname not only because it's considered "a bear of a course," but also because of a black bear who lives between the 14th and 16th fairways with her cubs, along with deer, porcupine, ducks and geese.

Ladies' leagues are Tuesday and Wednesday, with men's league play available Monday and Thursday evening and a couples league on Sunday evening. Open golfing is available seven days a week from dawn to dusk. A driving range is available as are golf carts and a club house. Plans are to build a new club house and pavilion, which when completed, will allow food will be served.

The Flynns and St. Pierres credit Andy School, their loan officer, for the assistance he gave in securing the necessary monies from the Timberwood Bank of Lakewood and Wabeno which allowed the purchase plus the planned construction. School was instrumental in making their dream a reality.

The Flynns also own Flynn Oil and Beverage C-store in downtown Suring along with Flynn Oil, which supplies bulk farm and heating fuels.

Linda St. Pierre owns Eagle Title Services of Mountain, while her husband, Chuck, operates Lakewood Log Homes and Furnishings, also, of Mountain. Chuck uses the Swedish cope method of hand scribing whole log construction in the homes and furnishings.
