Preparing to make room for a congregation that has grown from a rural community of 500 members in 1989 to more than 1,500 members today, Peace Lutheran Church, 1954 County U, will break ground for a 13,000-square-foot building expansion at 9:10 a.m. on Sunday. The $2 million-plus expansion will include a worship space that will be able to seat 380 people - an upgrade from the 200-seat sanctuary - and a smaller worship space that will seat about 80. It also will include a large gathering space, a nursery room, a library area and some new offices.
Future phases also are planned that will include more classrooms and a carport. The theme of this building project is "To the Glory of God, For the Love of Others." Birschbach & Associates are the architects, and Miron Construction Company will be the general contractor.
Peace Lutheran Church was founded in 1884. A new church building was dedicated in 1967, and the building was expanded in 1976 and 1994. Since then, the building's uses have multiplied to include the thriving Peaceful Beginnings Christian Childcare Center and four worship services each week. Peace Church is located a quarter-mile north of State 29/32 in the town of Pittsfield.
