PLATTEVILLE
Local student instumental in campus project.
There is a new water garden on the south side of the Pioneer Student Center of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville campus and senior Bill Borchardt of Green Bay was very instrumental in the creation of the project.
Since an original idea of having flowers in the school colors of blue and orange, set in an ornamental plant site wouldn't work because of the soil type, a water garden was suggested.
The garden features water sprouting down a gradual four foot six inch drop into a large pool on the south end.
Borchardt, a horticulture student, drew up his own design under the guidance of horiculture professor Michael Compton. The design of the garden is a hybrid between Borchardt's design and what the grounds crew designed.
Every fall some 3,000 plant bulbs are planted. Across the sidewalk from the water garden site hundreds of blue floss flowers and orange marigods have been planted. As the summer contiunes, more perennial flowers and some colorful shrubs will be added.
The project, which was in the works for about a year, not only allowed for cooperation between facilities management and the horticulture program, but it also prompted collaboration between students and professionals.
