CHAMPS We never met Mark Hatley, but we are told he was a class act, the kind the Green Bay Packers seem to attract. We send our sympathies over to everyone at 1265 Lombardi Ave. Thank you, Mary Panzer, for finally coming to your senses and dumping the plan to push the Taxpayer Bill of Rights through while a bunch of legislators were out of town. This big a measure needs a lot more discussion than that. Welcome back, railbirds and EAA visitors. Enjoy the Packers training camp, enjoy the Lambeau Field Atrium, and while you're at it, get away from there and enjoy the rest of Green Bay's attractions as well. Oh, and spend money. CHUMPS We don't care what Teresa Heinz Kerry says - we've never voted for a candidate for first lady in our lives - but the right-wing talking heads who are making fun of her accent should be ashamed of themselves. The flap over the John Kerry-in-a-clean suit photos shows how plain stupid politics has become. Kerry visited Cape Canaveral and inspected a space shuttle. To do so, he had to don a cover-everything clean suit. NASA took pictures. They went to the press. The Republicans said he looked silly, whereupon the Democrats said the photos were leaked. We think both parties should be put on the next shuttle - with a one-way ticket. Want to lose weight? Ride Washington's subway, the Metro. A government scientist finishing a candy bar on her way into a subway station where eating is prohibited was arrested, handcuffed and detained for three hours by transit police. Stephanie Willett, 45, said she was eating a PayDay bar on an escalator descending into a station when an officer warned her to finish it before entering the station. Both Willett and police agree that she nodded and put the last bit into her mouth before throwing the wrapper into a trash can. Willett said the officer then followed her into the station, one of several in downtown Washington and asked for identification, but Willett kept walking. She said she was then frisked and handcuffed. Metrorail has been criticized in the past for heavy-handed enforcement of the eating ban. In 2000, a police officer handcuffed a 12-year-old girl for eating a french fry on a subway platform. Now we know why all those big shots in D.C. take limos - they're hungry!
