The Intertribal Monitoring Association on Indian Trust Funds will hold the fifth in a series of six regional "Listening Conferences" from Aug. 12-13 in Oneida.
The conference will be held at the Norbert Hill Center, N7210 Seminary Road, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day. The conferences will be set up similar to congressional field hearings.
The conferences will focus on issues related to trust funds and trust assets including difficulties with Individual Indian Money accounts, leases of trust land and natural resources, trespass on trust land, appraisals of trust land and resources, the probate process, the problems associated with moving fee land into trust status, and issues related to highly-fractionated interests in trust land.
Representatives of the Office of the Special Trustee, the agency assigned by Congress to manage Indian trust assets, will attend the Oneida Listening Conference, and provide an update on OST progress and the "reorganization" of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The information will assist ITMA in development of policy positions, setting organizational goals and most importantly, to inform OST, BIA and Congress regarding major issues of concern.
Tribal leaders and members who wish to speak are encouraged to call ITMA at 505-247-1447, fax 505-247-1449, or e-mail [email protected] to register and request time to present a statement. To accommodate as many individuals as possible, a 10-minute limit will be placed on all presentations. Participants may register and obtain updated information online at www.itmatrustfunds.org. There will be limited same-day "walk-in" registration at each conference.
