Kelley Photo leaves for new development

Family-owned store has merged with Print Masters

By Patti Zarling
News-Chronicle

A long-standing business in downtown De Pere closed its doors on Friday. Kelley Photo Service, 100 N. Broadway, the last of three Kelley Photo stores in the Green Bay area, is closing shop. The business has merged with Print Masters to become KM Imaging Inc. The new business is located at 1314 S. Broadway.

The new business is owned by Daniel and Peggy Stoller, who owned Print Masters, and Doug and Vickie Seeman, who owned Kelley Photo.

"We've known each other for years and have done business back and forth, and we decided it makes sense to merge our services," Stoller said.

Photo/print business has been slower in the past few years, he noted.

While he can't pinpoint one specific reason, Stoller blamed slower sales on three trends: The first is that smaller, family-owned businesses can't compete with big-box stores and drug stores when it comes to developing snapshot photographers' films. Families can now take films from vacations to almost any discount store and have them developed at very low cost, he said, much lower than a family-owned photo shop could offer. "How do you compete?" he asked.

Another trend is the advent of digital photography, he said. He noted the technology for digital photography changes as rapidly as computer technology, and that it is very difficult for family-owned photo shops to stay on top of it in order to compete with the larger stores.

"We used to buy a piece of equipment knowing we could use it for 10 to 15 years," he said. "Now it changes within a year or two."

The final factor is the sluggish economy, Stoller said.

"It has affected everybody, including the family-owned businesses," he said.

The new company will not develop films for amateur photographers, Stoller said. It will focus on working with professionals, as well as making prints from prints, touch-up photos and other specialty work for both professionals and ordinary folks.

"It's been tough bringing two companies together," Stoller admitted. "There's been a lot of bumps in the road ... but it's progressing very well."
