Labor Day holiday will see fewer work zones, more traffic

News-Chronicle

As the highway construction season nears an end, holiday travelers are expected to pack state highways to enjoy the last three-day holiday weekend of summer.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Director of Highway Construction, Don Miller, says construction crews should cease operations at noon on Friday and won't resume operations again until 6 a.m. Sept. 7. Highways that may have lane restrictions include I-90 just west of Sparta where traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction and I-90/94 over the Baraboo River at State 33 where all traffic is shifted to one side of the median, although there are still two lanes in each direction.

The State Patrol noted that 17 people were killed during the Labor Day holiday period last year, the deadliest Labor Day holiday in 16 years (dating to 1987, when 17 also died). Traffic is expected to be heaviest between noon and 8 p.m. on Friday and again on Monday with the heaviest concentration in the late afternoon in the southern part of the state.

For a listing of where work zones are located across the state, you can log on to the Wisconsin DOT's Web site at www.dot.wisconsin.gov, then click on "Work zones." That will link you to a page where you can open up the latest list of road construction projects. You can also call 1-800-ROADWIS for a list of some of the larger projects along your intended route.

Some projects that Labor Day holiday travelers may encounter include:
1. Marquette Interchange in downtown Milwaukee. Preliminary work to prepare for reconstruction of the interchange. On ramp from 13th Street to westbound I-94 is closed.

2. I-90 West (northbound) between Janesville and the state line, 14.8 miles. Repairs to northbound lanes and bridges. Construction will be staged with two lanes of traffic open in each direction on the same side of the median. Lanes may be narrower than normal with no shoulders in work zone.

3. State 11 from Crossway Road, Burlington, to Racine Co. C, 6.1 miles. Road repairs will require detour via State 142, State 75 and State 11.

4. U.S. 12 from Cambridge to Fort Atkinson, 9.4 miles. Road work and reconfiguration of the U.S. 12/18 intersection in Cambridge will require detour via U.S. 18, State 26 and U.S. 12. Access to downtown Cambridge will be provided.

5. U.S. 51 from Co. CV to Reardon Road, 2.6 miles. U.S. 51 is one lane in each direction. Off ramps from Interstate often become congested.

6. I-90/94 over the Baraboo River from Cascade Mountain Road to State 33, 0.5 mile. Bridge and pavement replacement will shift traffic to one side of the median. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction. Speed limit reduced.

7.I -39 from U.S. 51 to the Marquette County line, 5 miles. Pavement replacement, however, two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction in each direction.

8. State 32 from Cedar Grove to Sheboygan Falls, 10 miles. Road repairs will require detour via State 32, I-43, State 28 and State 32.

9. US 151 from Waupun to Fond du Lac, 16 miles. Reconstruction of highway to four lanes. Some lane restrictions.

10. State 73 from Princeton to Neshkoro, 9.3 miles. Roadwork will require detour via State 23 and State 22.

13. U.S. 51/State 29/Marathon County N Interchange at Rib Mountain, 1 mile. Interchange reconstruction. Motorists traveling on County N, who wish to go south on U.S. 51 will be detoured east on State 29 to Rothschild. At the Business 51 interchange, motorists will be directed back onto State 29 westbound. They will follow State 29 back to the U.S. 51/State 29 east interchange, where they can access U.S. 51 southbound. This detour will be in effect through the spring of 2005. Motorists are advised to look for changes in traffic control, decrease speeds to 55 mph. 14. State 64 in Merrill between Center Avenue and Memorial Road. Road closed. Detour via State 64 to County K to U.S. 51.

15. U.S. 41 in Marinette, 2 miles. U.S. 41 is restricted to one 11-foot-wide lane in each direction at Hatti Street and one 10-foot-wide lane northbound only at the Cleveland Avenue intersection. Remaining northbound traffic will be detoured north on County T to State 64. All southbound U.S. 41 traffic will be detoured west on State 64 to County T. Expect congestion during peak hours.

16. U.S. 151 Dickeyville to Platteville, 11 miles. U.S. 151 is closed with detour for northbound traffic via County H and State 80; detour for southbound traffic is via State 80 and State 11.

17. U.S. 12 between Middleton and Sauk City, 19 miles. Conversion to four lanes will limit traffic to one eastbound lane and two westbound lanes at Middleton. Expect congestion during peak travel times. Maximum lane width through zone is 11 feet.

U.S. 53 freeway construction in Eau Claire, 7.5 miles. Project also affects traffic on U.S. 12 and County Q. U.S. 12 is one lane of traffic in each direction between U.S. 53 and 10th Street (Altoona). County Q is closed with traffic detoured using McKinley Road and the North Crossing extension. Large trucks are being detoured using existing U.S. 53 and the North Crossing extension.

20. State 29 west of Chippewa Falls, 2 miles. Roadway expansion to four lanes. Traffic will continue to use the temporary connection between existing U.S. 53 and the new U.S. 53 Freeway through the Chippewa County OO interchange loop. Traffic delays can be expected during peak travel times.

21. I-94 westbound at Hudson, 1 mile. Bridge repairs will shift all traffic onto the eastbound I-94 bridge. At least two lanes of traffic will be available each direction at all times. Travelers can expect congestion at peak travel times. Watch for the changeable message signs for congestion information.
