Green Bay Packers' fans donated more than $8,000 and nearly 300 coats at the annual Coats for Kids collection at Lambeau Field on Sunday.
Volunteers from The Salvation Army, WLUK-TV, Cumulus radio stations and the De Pere High School Spanish Club were stationed at various locations around Lambeau Field before Sunday's Packers game against the Chicago Bears.
The volunteers received 298 coats and $8,380 in cash - 50 percent more coats and 59 percent more cash than last year's Packer game collection. The Packer game collection is part of the overall Coats for Kids collection which continues through Oct. 16.
New or gently used coats of all sizes are sought, with a special need for coats in sizes 4T to 20. Coats can be dropped off at many area dry cleaners, who will clean the coats which are then distributed by The Salvation Army and other local community organizations. Coats can also be dropped off at the offices of WLUK and at Cumulus radio stations in Green Bay, Neenah and Oshkosh.
WLUK-TV Channel 11 and the Cumulus radio stations (WVBO, WOGB, WNAM, WOSH, WJLW, WDUZ, WQLH, WPCK, WPKR, WNGB and WWWX) are co-sponsors of the campaign, along with Bellin Health. The money collected at the game is used to purchase coats in sizes for which there are insufficient donations.
The Salvation Army in Green Bay estimates it will need approximately 4,500 coats to meet the anticipated need, with additional coats needed in other areas where coats are being collected. For more information, call The Salvation Army at 497-7053.
