Champs and chumps

News-Chronicle

It's good to see the inmates at the Sanger Powers Correctional Center getting back into the dog training business. There's a lot to be learned - for the dogs, too.

John Kerry decided to "escape to Wisconsin" to get ready for the presidential candidate debates. (We wonder what a Wisconsin-tinged Massachusetts accent sounds like.) What's interesting is that he's staying at the House on the Rock Resort. If anyplace in Wisconsin can get you prepared for a presidential debate, it's the bizarre House on the Rock.

Seeing the way HBO dominates the Emmys reminds us of the Olympics of 20 years ago - when the Soviet "amateurs" (all with cushy jobs in the Army or a borscht plant, allowing them plenty of time to train) would take on U.S. kids who had to fit practice into a schedule with five or six full-time jobs. Seriously, HBO, with no censorship and no advertisers to please, shouldn't be judged on the same standards as the broadcast networks.

CHUMPS

No matter your lot in life, it could be worse - you could work for CBS. First came the forged memos that led CBS News to its report on President Bush's National Guard exit. Quite simply, CBS forgot a maxim we were taught in Journalism 101: "If your mother says she loves you ... check it out." Then, the CBS-owned stations were each fined $27,500 for the infamous "wardrobe malfunction" in the Super Bowl. Yeah, like anyone at WFRV-TV Channel 5 had anything to do with that. Fine MTV, CBS's cable sister, which put on the act, but setting up the fine that way was ridiculous.

Tim Michels and Russ Feingold have set up six debates. All that gets them from us is a Double Chump (with cheese). First, none of them are in Green Bay, the state's third largest city. There should be one here on general principles. Second, they froze out the Libertarian Party candidate, even though he'll be on the ballot and the Libertarian candidate for governor got more than 5 percent of the vote two years ago. That's just wrong.

The maker of Twinkies, Interstate Baking Co., has filed for bankruptcy. We imagine this case will have a long shelf life. The reason, the company said, was because of the low-carb craze. We knew there was a reason we were getting tired of it.
