A Milwaukee man who had been charged with felony burglary in connection with the May 29, 2003, daytime theft of money reported at CJ's Foods and Spirits in Kewaunee was found not guilty by a jury Thursday in Kewaunee County Circuit Court.
The not guilty verdict for George Cain was rendered by a panel of jurors from the county following a one-day trial, in which Door County Judge D. Todd Ehlers presided. Cain, who is black, sought a change of venue because of his race, but Ehlers denied his request. Cain had been identified as being seen in the Kewaunee area on the day when someone allegedly walked into CJ's.
The case related to the report of a cash box containing $670 being taken from CJ's. Kewaunee Police Chief Frank Salentine said the establishment wasn't locked when the cash was reported stolen, while there was no report of forced entry or related vandalism.
